The University of Southern Indiana Women’s basketball team is gearing up for tournament action, with their first matchup against the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames. The Flames, representing the MVC, posted an 18-15 record for the season, showcasing formidable scorers in Junior Makiyah Williams and 5th-year player Keimari Rimmer. However, it’s their defensive prowess that commands attention, according to Head Coach Rick Stein.

Coach Stein emphasized the Flames’ aggressive Southern Indiana Women defensive approach, anticipating relentless pressure and a concerted effort to disrupt their opponents’ offensive rhythm. “They’re a team that is really going to get after us, they’re going to pressure us hard,” stated Coach Stein. “They’re going to make us work for buckets.” He acknowledged the Flames’ offensive versatility, highlighting their ability to attack the basket effectively. With such challenges ahead, Coach Stein underscored the importance of cohesive team play on both ends of the court, a fundamental aspect that has been integral to their season thus far.

The defensive pressure expected from UIC places a significant burden on USI’s guards, a challenge that point guard Vanessa Shafford believes they are prepared to tackle. Southern Indiana Women Drawing from past experiences against similarly aggressive opponents, Shafford expressed confidence in their ability to adapt to the Flames’ defensive strategies. “We’ve played teams that have pressured the whole entire game,” noted Shafford. “I think just going about that the same game plan that we had with them, understanding how their pressure works… and understanding what can work for us as far as getting across that.”
