A class action lawsuit filed in Florida alleges that Walmart engages in unfair and deceptive business practices, misleadingly benefiting from its customers’ grocery spending.

The lawsuit accuses Walmart of falsely inflating the weight of products and overcharging for certain items like meat, poultry, pork, seafood, and bagged citrus fruits. These allegations include bulk purchases of organic oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, and navel oranges sold in mesh or plastic bags in Walmart stores, as stated on the settlement’s website.

A spokesperson from Walmart informed CNBC Make It that despite denying the allegations, the company believes a settlement is the best course of action for both parties while still providing customers with everyday low prices.

Here’s how to determine if you qualify for compensation and how to submit a claim:

Who’s Eligible for Compensation:

As part of the $45 million settlement, certain Walmart customers may be entitled to receive cash payments of up to $500.

You may qualify if you purchased weighted goods and/or bagged citrus fruits in person from Walmart, Walmart Supercenter, or Wal Neighborhood Market locations in the U.S. or Puerto Rico between Oct. 19, 2018, and Jan. 19, 2024, according to the settlement’s website.

The amount you receive will depend on your spending on these items at Walduring the specified time frame. Here are the potential payouts outlined on the settlement website:

  • $10: If approved without receipts or documentation, for purchases of up to 50 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus fruits.
  • $15: If approved without receipts or documentation, for purchases of 51 to 75 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus fruits.
  • $20: If approved without receipts or documentation, for purchases of 76 to 100 weighted goods and/or bagged citrus fruits.
  • $25: If approved without receipts or documentation, for purchases of 101 or more weighted goods and/or bagged citrus fruits.
  • Up to $500: If approved with receipts or documentation, claimants will receive 2% of the total cost of substantiated purchases, capped at $500.

The deadline to submit a claim online or via mail is June 5, 2024. The claim form will require your personal information and whether you possess receipts for your purchases.

If your claim is approved, you’ll receive your payment via prepaid Mastercard, direct deposit, Zelle transfer, or Venmo transfer, according to the settlement’s website.
