Lewes in Bloom is hosting its annual May Day decorating contest on Saturday, May 4th, marking its fourth consecutive year. Volunteers from the organization kicked off the festivities by adorning Lewes City Hall’s door with a basket of vibrant fresh flowers as a sample of the decorative spirit.

Mayor Andrew Williams made a special visit on Tuesday, April 30th, to admire the colorful showcase and express his support for the competition. Lew in Bloom is inviting both residents and businesses to participate by embellishing their doors or porches with baskets or bouquets of fresh blooms on May 4th, when the judging committee will evaluate the entries.

According to Dianne Stevens, co-chair of the Lew in Bloom board of advisors, the contest serves as a delightful kickstart to their seasonal activities. She emphasized that community involvement in the competition enhances the city’s aesthetic appeal.

As of April 30th, Stevens reported an impressive count of over 50 entries. The grand prize, a generous $250 cash award, has been generously donated by Active Adults Realty of Lewes. Individuals interested in registering an entry can do so by visiting lewesinbloom.org/may-day, with the deadline set for Wednesday, May 1st.

Stevens also disclosed that Lew in Bloom’s planting activities for the season will commence during the week starting Monday, May 6th, further solidifying their commitment to enhancing the city’s floral landscape.
